Renovating your garden - have you thought about using sleepers?

If you love gardening and accessories such as garden furniture then there’s a good chance you’ll love sleepers once you know a bit more about how you could use them.

Railway sleepers are so versatile for the garden

Basically, if you’re constantly looking for an effective way to create garden design through raised plant beds, edging, or steps then a railway sleeper - yes, a railway sleeper - can really help. Perhaps you’ve been given one and you’re not entirely sure what to do with it, don’t worry because our team of landscape gardeners in West Lothian are always on hand to help and work with you, suggesting ideas on how best to use contours and shaping to make your garden look the very best it can.

Lay them up or down - it’s entirely up to you

You can use railway sleepers either horizontally or vertically. When used vertically, you can create an uneven wall or a curved one. All you’d need to do is dig a trench and then lower the sleeper’s in side by side. This arrangement will then be filled with concrete for the perfect finish. If you choose to lay them horizontally, you can use sand, gravel or soil to lay your sleepers. You could also do this over a layer of concrete. You want to be able to allow for drainage or otherwise you will be creating a large puddle rather than a raised plant bed.

Garden fences can also be made from railway sleepers

Perhaps strange, but true. You can create a fence with garden sleepers by stacking them horizontally and then keeping them upright with vertical posts. You can also create a box shape and use it to place soil and plant seeds. It’s a bit like putting Lego bricks together. All you have to do is choose where you want to place it. You can have your garden sleeper boxes as high or as low as you like, building up two or three layers.

Use a plastic membrane

You could also fix a sheet of plastic on the inside of your plant bed before you deposit soil, so there’s a layer between the garden sleeper and your soil. You could even use black garbage bags, but a heavier plastic may be better.
